This class introduces the serious beginning oil painter to issues
of color in representational painting.
The color concepts presented through discussion, exercises and slide images will be:
- primary,
secondary, tertiary and complementary colors in the color wheel; - mixing bright, clear colors;
- values
(light/dark) of colors and effects of changing values;
- modulating
color saturation;
- pure colors in
focal points;
- complementary
color schemes;
- color in light
and shadow
- tri-color,
modified tri-color, and warm-cool palettes
Virginia will demonstrate
setting up and starting a still life painting, then each student will apply
color concepts to his/her own still life
painting. Virginia will consult
individually regarding progress at each student’s easel.
Betty Edwards’ book on Color: a course in mastering the art of
mixing colors (Tarcher/Pengiun
Books, 2004) is highly recommended as supplemental reading. Students should bring the following supplies:
Portable easel
and palette, or plein air set-up
3 canvas boards
or stretched canvas supports (11 x 14 or larger)
Oil paints:
white
permanent
medium red/ or cadmium red medium
alizarin
crimson
cadmium
orange/ or cadmium yellow deep
cadmium
yellow light/ or cadmium yellow pale
ultramarine
blue
permanent
green and violet
Brushes: flat or filbert #2-4-6-8 (one each) and
palette knife for mixing paints
Oderless turpentine and container, plastic bags,
paper towels
